Lucas Cranach the Elder is one of the most important German artists of the 16th century. As court artist, he produced works of art – paintings and prints – that expressed the dynastic, political and religious self-image of the electors of Saxony. Numerous woodcuts and copperplate engravings resulted, pithy illustrations that continue to shape our perception of the courtly culture of his patrons to this day.
The exhibition shows works by Cranach from the Veste Coburg Art Collections. They range from politically significant portraits of the electors to religious and mythological scenes right through to fascinating depictions of tournaments.
