In the STUDIO: Images of Concord. The Coburg Princely Brothers Johann Casimir and Johann Ernst

Stylish, fashion-forward and noticeably uniform – thus the Coburg princely brothers Johann Casimir (1564–1633) and Johann Ernst (1566–1638) make their appearance: The dukes’ large youth portraits were acquired in 2020 and elaborately restored to showing their masterful execution since.

The Studio exhibit offers insights into the restoration process and it also shows that the joint performance in uniform dress was quite typical for the two brothers. On coins, pictures and during courtly festivities Johann Casimir and Johann Ernst aimed to evoke an image of concord throughout their life. This brotherly cohesion was essential for the successful build-up of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg founded in 1572. And cohesion has guaranteed political stability when it came to the partition into the two principalities Coburg and Eisenach in 1596.
